Jewellery Boxes
The current project is four jewellery boxes made from four different woods, (Australian She Oak, American Walnut, Honduras Mahogany and Tasmanian Huon Pine.
The design for each box is the same except for the carving on top with one drawn by the girl’s grandfather and the other three inspired by the May Gibbs Gum Nut stories.
Each box is constructed with hand-cut dovetails, and the base fitted into six storage areas, a middle tray with two handles at the sides for lifting out fitted out with two love hearts on the bottom.
A top tray with four lidded compartments to the sides and a row of ring holders in the middle.
All the trays are made from Tasmanian oak with the handles made from the same wood as the box. The lidded compartments on the top tray have quartered walnut veneer framed by ebony veneer and a turned knob for each lid made from the same wood as the box frame.
The lid is made from 30mm thick wood with 10mm routed out from the bottom to allow for a drop-down letter compartment and the top 10mm allows for the carving to be completed, leaving a full 10mm thickness in the middle for strength.
The boxes are all French polished by hand and completed with a waxed semi-sheen finish.
All boxes are lined with crush velvet of the customer’s choice and a similar colour satin for the drop-down flap inside the lid.
